First Generation Students Discussion from NSHE SISGROUP Mail List 3/19/08
Desc of Issue: First Generation Students
Description of this data issue:
Much work has already been done to add data collection to admissions applications that document the educational level of parents of applicants.
SLT has written logic that will take that information, and from it determine which applicants are first generation college applicants, and then upload that information into a flag in SIS called the DEMO09 filed.
However, a recent report looking at Fall 2007 applicants shows that of 12,449 applicants, 2,946 have null values in this field. This is 24%, and is a large enough number to open a question about why there is such a large number of null values.
At one time there was a problem matching student application to records in SIS. If the matching is still the cause of this problem, then possibly we should consider the timing of assigning an SIS number to an application.
