ROI on a data dictionary?
Posted by Ramon Padilla @ May 8, 2006
I was recently asked the question: Does the ROI on the data dictionary that my organization religiously maintains justify its cost? I answered with a resounding "Yes!" Then I thought, why would anyone ask that question?

Questions Meta Data Can Answer
by Robert S. Seiner
Published in TDAN.com January 2000
Questions are still raised about meta data. What exactly is meta data? How much will it cost to manage meta data? How do I justify the "investment" in meta data? Who uses meta data? These are all very important questions with the answers becoming a key determinant of whether or not a company will proceed with a meta data management strategy and implementation plan. ....These questions are not always easy to answer.... Instead of focusing on "answers" to meta data questions, this article will focus on the "questions" that meta data can answer.

Producing Multipurpose Metadata for Data Quality and a Data Dictionary
Overview: One of the benefits of a data warehouse is that it provides a "Single version of the truth". But the "Truth" is often difficult to understand, changes quickly, and is only as accurate as the information it is based on. Metadata is needed to assess quality of the data from which the truth is derived, and the same metadata is valuable in a data dictionary for users.

Requirements Model 4 - The Data Dictionary
The concept of a data dictionary is just as valid today as it was 27 years ago. A data dictionary is a model that allows you to look at the properties of all the data in your system in a very analytical and structured fashion.

Guidelines for Developing a Data Dictionary (AHIMA - American Health Information Management Association)
Information systems are only as good as their data. Without a mutually agreed-upon set of data elements with clearly defined names and definitions, the validity and reliability of the data contained in a system are suspect at best and must be discounted at worst. The data dictionary and its relationship with the metadata registry are the foundation of an information system and the central building block that supports communication across business processes.

The Role of Data Dictionary in a Package Environment
by Satyajeet Dhumne
Published in TDAN.com January 2006
Before we jump in to the subject, let's take a look at the role of the Data Dictionary (DD) in the software evaluation process. DD should be treated as a critical component of the software package that a vendor provides. If you have a methodology for software and vendor evaluation, assign some weight to the availability of a DD as well.

You might find your requirements resulting from this survey match what Frank Palmeri, database programmer/analyst, recommends. "A good data dictionary should be dynamic, not static; open, not proprietary; cost-effective, not expensive; easy to implement, not difficult; easy to understand, not complicated; and, above all else, a joy to use. When you find one that meets all these requirements, please let me know what it is!"

Data collected and captured by the State Government is a valuable resource. This data contains important operational, research and historical information about the State. Because information management within the State has evolved in a largely decentralized manner, government databases may not be compatible, thus inhibiting appropriate and authorized data sharing and fostering duplication. The State-wide Data Dictionary will redress this problem
