6/13/07 - Karen Emptage provided information regarding FERPA, and explained what UNLV is doing to assure that users of student data understand what the law requires of them and how students are being informed of their rights under the law.
1. Flyer will be sent out to all students as an annual notification of their rights under FERPA.
2. SCS security Group - how other NSHE schools are getting FERPA information out before granting SIS access. UNLV suggests that a link to a FERPA tutorial be provided and a form printed out when the tutorial is completed . A FERPA tutorial is built but not available on the web yet.
3.The Name Directory Release lets each student decide whether their information could be released or not. There are options to specify commercial purpose, UNLV purpose, etc. If UNLV contracts with a company to provide basic student services, for example Tuition Management, the contracting company can use information but may not re-disclose it.
Karen reported on a FERPA Workshop with LeRoy Rooker, Director of the Family Policy Compliance Office U.S. Department of Education that was held here at UNLV in mid-May. Mr. Rooker provided an overview of FERPA (Family Educational Records Privacy Act) and discussed new FERPA issues and updates.
The agenda for that session included:
- What exactly are our students' rights as they pertain to their educational records?
- What can you discuss with a concerned parent over the phone about their child who attends your institution?
- What are your responsibilities as a higher education employee who has access to a large amount of confidential information about your students?
This presentation was interactive, with a lot of participation from the audience.
