UNLV Data Governance StructureWhat is in place, what remains to be established.

The UNLV Data Governance Structure is derived from the Summary Proposal for a University Data Management Structure, approved by CIOC, 3-2005 and by Cabinet, 4-2005

The committee structure would consist of a Data Policy Committee, a Data Managers Committee, and associated Users Groups. Together these groups would represent policy-level and operational-level responsibility for managing the University’s information resources. Data managers from each enterprise level system would establish the Data Users Groups to provide a formal mechanism for communication among data users, data processors, and data managers. These individuals connect the data managers to ways in which the institution uses the data.

Data Policy Committee is now Data Governance Executive Sponsors
Data Managers Committee is Data Governance Council, made up of data stewards.

Data Users Groups have not been formally established.

Note the roles defined for the Data Users Groups
1. Provide a formal mechanism for communication among data users, data processors, and data managers.
2. Connect the data managers to ways in which the institution uses the data

Who establishes the user's groups?

Data Users Groups are to be established by the Data Stewards. The users groups will assist the stewards in communicating campus needs and priorities, and to identify data projects that need to be initiated.

Who are data users for a given area?

Each major area has data users, some individuals are internal, others external. Some guidelines to identify them within an area:

  1. People submitting requests for access to data
  2. UNLV staff requesting reports from your area
  3. Would not include the NSHE user groups for the core systems (SIS, HRMS, Advantage) as these groups are organized by the System to address cross-campus issues and do not necessarily attend to campus user requirements.
  4. Look carefully at user group membership, as the individuals who make up the data users groups will also likely be key resources for the data stewards during the iNtegrate implementation.

Next steps:  Establish data users groups to ensure track, and document user input to the data governance process. Once they are identified, a process for including them in data governance should be established, which for some areas may include scheduled meetings while with others it could be based on the existence of proposed projects. Note:  in some areas data users groups may already be established. Example SIS data user group.

Timeframe: Identify, contact, and submit a list of users by the January ’08 DGCouncil meeting.
